These storms end only once Link completes a series of quests. The threat of never-ending storms makes for moody gameplay. But real storms “can’t last forever,” says Stephanie Spera, a physical geographer at the University of Richmond in Virginia. Storms result from imbalances between moisture and temperature. Though violent at times, thunderstorms help redistribute heat, moisture and electrical charges. “The whole purpose of anything in weather is to get the atmosphere back in balance,” says meteorologist Chris Vagasky of the Wisconsin Environmental Mesonet, a statewide network of weather stations. To fuel constant thunderstorms, such imbalances would have to persist. But Earth’s atmospheric physics ensures that even the strongest storms eventually fade away. Constant thunderstorms would need ongoing supplies of storm ingredients, Vagasky says. For one, you’d need a “persistent conveyor belt of warm, moist air.” And heat, maybe 24-hour sunlight. As rising warm air condenses into cloud-forming droplets, then cooling rain and downward winds (which dissipate storms on Earth), the cycling would refuel the storm. Water droplets placed on a flat soap film act like galaxies that orbit one another before coalescing. As they merge, the water droplets take on shapes reminiscent of those that appear in astronomical images of colliding galaxies , physicist Jean-Paul Martischang and colleagues report in the April PNAS Nexus . The water droplets might eventually be useful for studying gravitational attraction in a laboratory, to better understand how galaxies collide and coalesce. When plopped on a horizontal soap film — in the laboratory equivalent of a bubble wand — a water droplet takes on a hammocklike shape, about a centimeter wide. That disrupts the shape of the soap film, pulling it downward. That sagging causes drops to attract one another, orbit and coalesce. To visualize the translucent water droplets, the researchers took advantage of the fact that each droplet acts like a lens that causes blurring. They placed a randomized pattern of dots below the film. Mapping out where that pattern was blurred revealed the drops’ locations and shapes. Similar structures appear in water droplets coalescing on a soap film (top; dark shapes show where blurring caused by the droplets occurs) and in merging galaxies (bottom). Along the way, the duo will subsist entirely on slowly decomposing seal meat. Keen’s roughly 320-kilometer ski across the country’s icy north serves as a loose proxy for how past Inuit and other arctic peoples might have survived similar treks across barren landscapes. The journey is part renegade chef experiment – “Is there a line between … fermented or rotten?” wonders Keen, who lives in Suffolk – and part scientific endeavor. For the latter, he’s collecting fecal samples from himself and the dog throughout the journey. That way, researchers can see how shifting from a Western diet to a traditional Inuit diet alters the microbes in his gut, or gut microbiome. Western diets are high in processed foods and fresh fruits and vegetables that can’t grow in the frigid Arctic. By comparison, the traditional Inuit diet consists of 98 percent meat, says Inuit microbiologist Aviâja Lyberth Hauptmann of the University of Greenland in Nuuk. Today, high-meat diets have been linked with cancers, digestive disorders and heart disease. But before a few decades ago, when food imports from Denmark became commonplace, Inuit people ate mostly meat and almost no plants without such issues, Hauptmann says. He loved snorkeling and recreational freediving, the loose term for diving deep underwater with no breathing gear. He would head down after the colorful creatures he spotted and stay underwater as long as possible to see as much as possible. Then, while chaperoning a 2017 snorkel trip in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Francis did one last freedive and disappeared. The boat’s captain found his body 10 meters down an hour later. Investigators later determined that Francis had suffered from a hypoxic blackout , also often called a shallow water blackout: He passed out when his brain couldn’t get enough oxygen — a problem that can come on without warning even among experienced swimmers. Their findings suggest these ideas could have surprising consequences for how time itself behaves, including tiny limits on how precisely it can be measured.
